Have You Ever Wondered Why McDonalds Burgers Dont Rot?

McDonalds burgers do not show any signs of rotting, and recently we all witnessed the story about their sandwich that does not seem spoiled even 14 years after it was prepared.

The Canadian McDonalds offered an alternative explanation to a customers question about the unusually long shelf life of their burgers.

The reality is that McDonalds burgers, fries and chicken are like any other food and they will sure rot if kept in certain conditions explains Dr Keith Warriner, a program director of the Department of Food Quality Research at the University of Guelph.

There are a lot of videos showing how sandwiches do not rot for a long period of time, and supposedly it is a proof that these food products contain a lot of preservatives and chemicals. The organisms that cause the rotting need water, food, warmth to develop and function, same as we do. If you remove one of these elements, these microorganisms will not develop and spoil the food said doctor Warriner.

In the case of McDonalds hamburger, the meat loses a lot of water during its preparation, and the bread loses its moisture during the grilling. This means that the sandwich is relatively dry and if left in a room with a normal humidity, instead of rotting, it will keep losing its moisture, explains Warriner.

According to him, if the sandwich is left packed in order to keep it from drying out or if you leave it in a humid place, it will sure rot as any other food.

If you do the same experiment using a homemade hamburger with a similar level of moisture, you will get the same result in the relatively same conditions says Warriner.

A Hamburger Today, a food blog, tested this claiming and came to the conclusion that even homemade sandwiches do not rot when prepared in the same way, by removing the moisture, writes Business Insider.

Of course, we expect that the companys statement will lead to some further tests and comparations, just to verify McDonalds theory.
